The Waste-to-Energy plant project in Salo is supported by ALMA
Lounavoima Oy was looking for a data system that would support the WtE plant project from its designing phase all the way to the commissioning and operating stage. In the course of the designing process it is intended to develop an electronic plant template, or rather a ‘power plant template’ that would make transition from one stage of the project to the next as easy and simple as possible.
‘The deployment process of the ALMA system was extremely flexible. Thanks to this system we are always in possession of real-time information about different stages and functions of the power plant. Moreover, the system is mobile, which is very important, in particular when we shall later transition from the design stage to the operating and maintenance stage,’ says Petri Onikki, the CEO of Lounavoima.
‘We were looking for a complete system from a supplier who had received good references from others. With ALMA’s support the design stage of the power plant has had a good start, and the power plant will be up and running in January of 2021.’
Recovered heat, efficient processes
Lounavoima Oy started their business in late 2017. The Salo WtE plant project was launched at the same time. After the power plant is completed, it will be getting waste from 17 municipalities. The combustion process itself generates a lot of heat, however heat will also be recovered through the efficient flue gas cleaning process. Heat generated at the WtE plant is delivered to the Salo’s district heating network. In addition to that the plant will sell electricity to the national grid.
Even now, when our data system is at the design stage, it has already a couple of dozens of users. Any data concerning the plant’s property, equipment, and connections, which may be relevant to designing and maintenance of the plant, are recorded in the system. After the plant is commissioned, it will receive daily around 40 truckloads of waste, which means that the process has to be transparent and the maintenance has to be fast. We cannot afford any unplanned disruptions, and the maintenance has to be continuous and efficient,’ Onikki adds.
Flexibility along with savings in time and funds
According to Onikki, the deployment process of ALMA has been extremely flexible. He believes that the greatest benefits produced by the data system are efficient maintenance and documentation management. All data are accessible for all users of the system in real time.
‘The system will certainly save us a great deal of time and money over the coming years. The most important aspect is smooth transition from the design stage to the running of the plant in early 2021. With this data system that can be done flexibly, as any data gathered during the design stage can be used in the maintenance of the power plant. We have concluded a 2 + 5-year contract with ALMA, where the first two years cover the designing and construction stage and the latter five will apply to maintenance,’ says he.
