Salico Oy: A user-friendly information system to replace the existing one

The user-friendly Finnish information system was exactly what Salico Oy, specialised in fruit and vegetable processing, was after. Vitec ALMA was happy to provide such a maintenance and documentation management system.

Salico Oy processes fruit and vegetables for restaurants and shops. Its clients include businesses of various sizes throughout Finland.

“In summer 2019, Salico acquired Apetit Oyj’s fresh produce business. With this transaction, we also acquired an older information system that we weren’t particularly happy with. However, we were already aware of Vitec ALMA’s information system. It had great usability and we were able to customise it easily on our own. We also wanted a system with support functions in our native language,” Kari Vieno, the technical manager at Salico Oy said about the background of the purchase.

Vitec ALMA’s system maintenance and documentation management system was officially introduced at Salico Oy in March 2020.

All quality records in the same system

Salico Oy operates in the food industry, which is a very closely monitored and certified industry. Long before the corona crisis, very many systematic client and quality audits and self-monitoring processes were carried out in the food industry. Records must be kept of all stages of production as well as inspections. These can be used to verify the safety and quality of the fruit and vegetables.

“Now, all of these records are made into Vitec ALMA’s system, where they are available for clients and authorities. The system also includes various production maintenance records entered on the go, as well as property maintenance notes. All our maintenance is outsourced, but the subcontractors will also be included in our information system,” Vieno describes the scope of the system.

In all, there are about 120 people working at Salico Oy’s Kivikko office. Most of them do not use ALMA’s system, but including the company’s subcontractors, there will be nearly 20 users in the future. Kari Vieno is the system administrator.

“I wanted us to have a modern system that is scalable and customisable to our needs. Based on initial experience, the system is really easy to manage and making changes is effortless. It’s easy to add new equipment, work orders and other attributes to the system,” he praised.

Better production management

The new information system is an investment for the future, so Vieno expects it to result in many different benefits for Salico. The investment will pay for itself through improved production efficiency.

“The financial benefit will be visible in the long run, when all our operations are documented better, enabling us to develop our operations. Maintenance metrics help us monitor the activities of our subcontractors, while also having a better overview of our own equipment and production processes, Vieno listed.

Salico Oy is Finland’s largest supplier of fresh processed fruit and vegetables to wholesalers and fast food chains. The company uses the latest technology, which enables high capacity and efficiency. Salico’s annual processed fruit and vegetable production volume is about 6.5 million kilograms.
