The maintenance information system in use at Gasgrid Finland Oy is about to reach the end of its life cycle. Gasgrid conducted a tender mapping and selection process and chose ALMA as its new maintenance and asset management system.

Gasgrid Finland Oy is a Finnish state-owned company and transmission system operator with system responsibility. The company operates a high-pressure natural gas transmission system in Finland. Gasgrid Finland is responsible for gas transmission control, operation supervision, technical functionality of the transmission system, and maintenance of gas quality in the transmission system. The high-pressure transmission system totals 1,150 kilometres in length and includes compressor stations to raise gas pressure, pressure reduction stations, valve stations, and a data transmission system. Natural gas comes to Finland from Russia and Estonia.

We acknowledged that the life cycle of the information system we used was coming to an end. We mapped several different alternatives to find a solution best suiting our needs. We wanted the system to improve knowledge management and to serve as a support for reporting, analysis and future planning. The possibility for developing system-related functionalities was also considered a must. Based on overall assessment, we decided in favour of ALMA. The system meets the current specifications, but also possible future functionality needs, says Marko Ikävalko, Asset Manager of Gasgrid Finland Oy.

The references of the system offered by Vitec ALMA were convincing and Ikävalko also had a chance to find out how the system works in practice.

Good return on functionality, usability and maintainability. According to Ikävalko, these were Gasgrid Finland’s most important information system selection criteria.

From maintenance to broader asset management

The maintenance and asset management system will be used by Gasgrid Finland’s own employees, but also by representatives of the company’s service providers and co-operation partners. In all, there will be about a hundred system users.

We originally started out with maintenance, but quickly realized that it would be reasonable to build a broader asset management system in the same connection. The new system replaces a number of our earlier partial solutions. Our reporting tool will now be up-to-date, and the same goes for other documentation and various instructions. In ALMA, all of these can be managed through a single system, Ikävalko notes.

Scattered information pooled and visible

In autumn 2020, Gasgrid Finland’s asset management system has not yet been completed, but the expectations are high.

I expect our reporting level to improve considerably, for with the help of ALMA, we can create and retrieve reports on many of our various work events. Work management and planning will become more efficient, since work plans and instructions can be delivered to the exactly right people with unprecedented precision, says Ikävalko.

The project has started out smoothly, without technical challenges. We have already tested many of the system’s functionalities in practice, and so the information is becoming truly visible.
